VOTERS RENEW PARCEL FEE FOR SLIDELL-AREA FIRE SERVICE

Voters in St. Tammany Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 today approved the renewal of a parcel fee that funds operations at Slidell-area agency.

With all precincts reporting, voters overwhelmingly approved the measure with 72 percent of the vote.

The $39 annual parcel fee, approved by voters in 2006, provides 7 percent of the Fire District’s annual budget, and pays for personnel, equipment and other needs.  Fire District 1 is the largest in St. Tammany Parish, serving 89,000 occupants – one-third of the Parish – in addition to visitors, shoppers, workers and passers-through.

“On behalf of the 158 men and women of Fire District 1, I thank the voters tonight,” said Fire District 1 Chief Chris Kaufmann.  “This funding mechanism is fair, reasonable, and vital to maintaining the level of service to which our citizens are accustomed.  We launched an aggressive public awareness campaign ahead of this election, and we’re honored with the outcome.”
