Firefighters Battle Early Morning Blaze

Slidell, LA. – St. Tammany Fire District #1 responded to the report of a
residential structure fire at 3064 S. Palm Dr. in Slidell.  Firefighters
arrived on the scene in 4 minutes to find heavy flames and black smoke coming
from the rear and roof of a 3000 square foot single story raised home.  The
entire attic of the home was also fully involved with fire.  It took
firefighters one hour to extinguish the fire and bring the situation under
control.

Interconnected smoke detectors installed throughout the house alerted the
owner and his family of the fire.  They were able to safely evacuate the
residence and a neighbor called 911 from a cell phone.  Over fifty percent
of the home suffered extensive fire damage.  The remainder of the home
suffered extensive heat and smoke damage.  The fire started on a rear deck
where heat lamps were set up to protect some plants from the freezing weather.
The Red Cross was notified to provide assistance to the family.  No injuries
were reported.
