One Person Killed in Afternoon House Fire
Slidell, LA. – St. Tammany Fire District #1 responded to the report of a residential structure fire at 1451 St. Ann Place in Slidell with a possible occupant trapped inside. Firefighters arrived on the scene in a little over two minutes to find half the house fully involved with fire and heavy smoke pouring out the rest of the home. Firefighters were alerted by neighbors that an occupant was trapped inside. Firefighters immediately began rescue operations and were able to remove the unconscious victim from a rear bedroom by cutting a hole in the exterior wall. Firefighters provided advanced medical care until Acadian Ambulance arrived on the scene. The victim was then transported to Slidell Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Sadly, the victim died as a result of her injuries from the fire. While the rescue operation was underway, additional teams of firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and bring the situation under control in 39 minutes.
A neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke and flames coming from the residence. Other neighbors and a passerby unsuccessfully attempted to rescue the occupant prior to the fire department arriving on the scene. Two other occupants were home at the time of the fire and safely escaped the blaze. One of them received minor burns and was transported to Slidell Memorial Hospital for treatment. Over 60 percent of the home suffered significant fire damage and is considered to be a total loss.
St. Tammany Fire District #1 investigators were assisted by ATF and State Fire Marshal investigators in determining the cause of the fire. The fire is currently under investigation.
