Quick Actions by Firefighters Lessens Kitchen Fire Damage
Slidell, LA. – St. Tammany Fire District #1 responded to a residential structure
fire at 141 South St. in Slidell. Firefighters arrived on the scene in just
under 5 minutes to find smoke coming from a 1200 square foot single story
residence. Ladder 17 was the first truck on the scene and immediately made
an aggressive interior attack. Captain Jack Ohlenforst and Firefighter Matt
Spreen pulled a 200’ pre-connect cross lay hose and began to extinguish the
fire while Fire Operator Will Moore supplied them with water. Firefighters
were able to extinguish the fire and bring the situation under control within
1 minute of arriving on the scene.
The resident was heating up a pot of oil and was in another room when the smoke
detector started going off. The resident discovered the fire on the stove and
attempted to extinguish it before safely evacuating the house and calling 911
from a cell phone. Firefighters quickly carried the burning pot outside which
minimized the damage to the kitchen. The residence received minor fire damage
to the kitchen and light smoke damage throughout the rest of the home. A minimal
amount of water was used to extinguish the fire which lessened the amount of
damage to the residence. No injuries were reported.
