The Harrison family is lucky to be alive.
Shortly after 7 a.m. today, a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the family\’s home at 201 Broad St., Slidell, and knocked on the door to awaken them.
Fire District 1 received a 911 call at 7:26 a.m. and was on the scene in seven minutes. The fire was under control shortly after 8 a.m.
Five adults and an 18-month-old child in the home escaped unharmed.
Firefighters believe a heater vent unit in one of the home\’s bathrooms caught fire. Damage to the home is estimated at $60,000. The family had no insurance.
\”There was no smoke detector in this house, and the vigilance of a neighbor saved six lives this morning,\” said FD1 Chief Larry Hess.
Homeowner Laura Harrison, still in shock from the morning\’s events, said she is unsure which neighbor knocked on the door, but FD1 leaders want to identify the Good Samaritan and acknowledge her or his lifesaving action.
