Slidell Firefighters to begin new Rapid Diver Rescue program
During recent months the firefighters of St. Tammany Fire District No. 1 have been confronted with several complex water-related rescues.
Due to the numerous water ways in this area, specific engine companies within Fire District No. 1 are being provided with Rescue Diver underwater rescue equipment. This rescue equipment is very similar to SCUBA; however, is much more compact and quicker to don. According to officials at Fire District No. 1 utilizing this equipment will save up to 30 minutes when beginning water related rescues. The new enhancement is intended to supplement the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Dive/Rescue Team until they can be deployed.
Starting next week (May 13, 14, and 15) and again the following week (May 19, 20, and 21), the fire department will begin training personnel in the use of this specialized equipment. With the help of Coral Reef Dive Shop and Cross Gates Athletic Club, fire department personnel will train in water to begin the process of familiarization of the equipment. The equipment is targeted to be in service by June 1st.
