Smoldering Roof Fire causes temporary Evacuation of the third floor at Slidell Memorial Hospital

Slidell, LA. – St. Tammany Fire District #1 responded to Slidell Memorial Hospital, located at 1001 Gause Blvd., for the report of a commercial structure fire.  Firefighters arrived on the scene in under five minutes to find light smoke in the hallways of the third floor.  The hospital staff had already evacuated all of the third floor patients to the second floor.  Firefighters searched the third floor for the source of the smoke prior to accessing the roof.  With the use of thermal imagers, they were able to locate some foam insulation and wooden beams that were smoldering under the tar paper of the roof.  Firefighters cut a two foot by twenty foot section out of the roof and extinguished the foam insulation and wood beams.  It took firefighters a little over two and a half hours to bring the situation under control.

The fire was reported by a hospital employee who called 911.  There was no damage reported to the interior of the hospital and only minor damage to the roof.  Workers had been doing work on the roof over the last couple of days.  The cause of the fire is believed to have been related to the heating process involved with the roofing work.  No injuries were reported.
