Public Fire Education Facts Sheet

  • The Fire Safety Trailer visits both public and private elementary schools each year
  • In 2013, over 7,691 kids and 2,577 adults were educated on fire safety
  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home
  • Test smoke alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old
  • Practice fire drills at home – Exit Drills in the Home (E.D.I.T.H.)

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Statistics – (2007 to 2011)

  • Approximately 60 percent of reported home deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms
  • Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, followed by heating equipment
  • On average, seven people died in U.S. home fires per day
