For Immediate Release – Change Your Clock, Change your Battery

For Immediate Release
October 31, 2013

St. Tammany Fire District No. 1 reminds us it’s time to
“Change Your Clock / Change Your Battery”
SLIDELL, LA. – This weekend, daylight savings time ends as we turn our clocks
back one hour.  St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1 would like to remind
residents that it is also time to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.
Working smoke detectors reduce the risk of death in a home fire by nearly 50%.
Changing your batteries and testing your smoke detectors when you change your
clocks is just one simple way homeowners can protect themselves. In addition,
the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing your smoke
detector every eight to ten years.

To save lives and prevent needless injuries in Slidell, St. Tammany Fire
Protection District No. 1 has joined forces with the International Association
of Fire Chiefs and Energizer brand batteries. For nearly two decades the
“Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” campaign has urged all Americans to
adopt a simple, life-saving habit: change their smoke alarm batteries when
changing their clocks back every fall.  9-volt and AA Energizer Batteries will
be available, free of charge, at Fire Stations in Slidell through Monday,
November 11, 2013, while supplies last, to adults only, with a limit of two
per household.

Chad Duffaut, Chief of Fire Prevention, recommends residents use the “extra”
hour they save to test their smoke detectors by pushing the test button,
planning “two ways out” and practicing those escape routes with the entire
family.
