Department Initiatives

St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1 is a progressive fire department subscribing to the principles of servant-based leadership and employee inclusion. We focus that belief in training our leaders that they have two major internal customer responsibilities:

  1. Provide the safest environment possible while operating in a mission-based occupation that is exceptionally dangerous by its very nature.

  2. Promote a workplace that demands continuing education throughout the career of each member.

At the same time, we focus our external customer responsibilities on the following:

  1. Commit to the public only the safest, most effective, cost efficient emergency services possible.

  2. Maintain the highest level of honesty and integrity while being stewards of the public’s funds and trust.

Keeping in mind, these four fundamental prerequisites you will see how they serve as the genesis for each of our current initiatives.

 

Current Initiatives 

  1. Personnel Safety and Education:

    1. We believe that reducing on-the-job injuries is directly related to two major areas: physical fitness and improved training. As you might have noticed in our Wellness/Fitness Initiative addressed as a stand alone issue within this website, we place a very high value on regular exercise. Since the inception of this program, we have noted a decrease in job related injuries to such an extent that this year we were recognized for the fourth time since 2007 as one of the top 70 safest places of employment in Louisiana by the Louisiana Worker’s Compensation Company (LWCC) out of 16,000 places of employment insured by LWCC.

    2. Our formal training programs have improved our ability to deliver the highest quality emergency services to our public. Promotional Standards and Qualifications, Succession Planning and Mentoring that challenge members to acquire identified certifications and/or formal education for their next promotion are helping our employees exceed our performance expectations. 

  2. External Customer Deliverables:

    1. The broadest initiative we have with respect to our external customers is the transition from a Basic Life Support (BLS) provider to an Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider. While we do not transport patients to the hospital; our goal is to have a Paramedic on each engine company to provide our customers with the highest Emergency Medical Services while awaiting transport.

  3. Accreditation:

    1. St. Tammany Fire District No. 1 is currently the only internationally accredited municipal fire department in Louisiana. We challenged each member with improving their individual safety and growth, while challenging ourselves as an organization to achieve that “next level”. As the accreditation model is a continuous improvement model, our focus is to continue improving processes in order to maintain our accredited status.

While we have numerous other, less encompassing initiatives, these are the more global projects that are directly related to our philosophy of servant-based, principle-centered leadership.
