Hazardous Materials Drill conducted by Multiple Agencies

Slidell, LA. – On Wednesday, August 20, 2014 a hazardous materials drill was conducted at the Louisiana National Guard base at Camp Villere in Slidell.  The participating agencies were the Louisiana National Guard, St. Tammany Fire District # 1, Slidell Police Department, Airgas hazardous materials team and the National Weather Service.  The drill was a joint effort to have the participating agencies work together and exercise their emergency response plans.

The drill scenario involved a release of toxic gases from cylinders.  The drill focused on incident command, communications, hazards assessment, mitigation and severe weather.  Hazardous materials technicians from the St. Tammany Fire District # 1’s hazardous materials team and Airgas hazardous materials team wore chemical protective clothing while working with the gas cylinders.  The drill took a number of weeks of planning and preparation.  There are future exercises planned to increase the response capability of the agencies involved.
