St. Tammany Fire District No. 1 Steps up to help local churches deliver Thanksgiving meals to families in need.
SLIDELL, LA., November 21, 2012 – Members of St.Tammany Fire District #1 helped two local churches deliver Thanksgiving meals to families in need.  Together with the Slidell Police Association, members of the Slidell Fire Fighters Association used fire trucks and off duty personnel to assist with the deliveries.
On Sunday November 18, 2012 Northshore Church located at 310 Kensington Blvd. assembled sixty-five Turkey meals for the first responders to deliver.  The meal kits included the turkey and all the fixings.  According to Andrew Ogea, the Community Outreach Pastor, this is the second consecutive year that the church has been able to deliver meals.  A fire truck and fire department pickup trucks along with Slidell Police units made the deliveries.
On Tuesday November 20, 2012, Mt. Olive Church, located at 2457 2nd Street, assembled thirty-eight Turkey meals. According to Mrs. Jackie Russ, the Volunteer Coordinator for Mt. Olive Church, 22 of the meals were picked up at the church by the families in need. Sixteen were delivered by the fire trucks, with the personnel from Central Fire Station in Old Town.   Mrs. Russ was able to ride in the fire truck to help the firefighters deliver the meals.  Mrs. Russ and the firefighters were touched by the gratitude shown by the families.  The firefighters were deeply touched that they could help bring families a little happiness during the Thanksgiving holiday.
